Extracts from a travel journal – Kanchanaburi

       Sunset from the guesthouse

13th Jan 2011

Got minibus to Kanchanaburi today. Lots of confusion but finally made it, just a bit squashed! Had pre-booked a guest house by the river. Basic but with a nice eating/drinking area. So peaceful here. Saw the biggest cockroach ever!

Check me out riding a bike!

14th Jan 2011

Went on a bike ride today (first time in 10 years) to the other side of the river and up a hill (I pushed my bike!) to a temple with a cave. The cave was really big and full of buddha statues. Temples were closed, but were lovely from the outside. Didn’t fall off my bike once! Booked a trip tomorrow to the falls, Hellfire pass and the bridge – 890tb each inc. train ticket, lunchs, falls entrance and transport. Looking forward to it – starts at 8am so early night tonight!

The falls at Erawan National Park

Hellfire Pass

The Death Railway

The Bridge over the River Kwai

15th Jan 2011

Went on our tour today:

Erawan Falls and National Park: Incredible and stunning. Went swimming and had our feet nibbled by fish (bit weird). Saw a MONKEY!!!

Hellfire Pass: V. moving and interesting museum.

Death Railway: Nice ride and good scenery – fun!

Bridge over the River Kwai: lots of tourists and shops, a bit depressing but saw the bridge.

All for 890tb each! Staying two more nights after this one. Tiger Temple tomorrow, although apparently the tigers are all drugged which is v. sad.

16th Jan 2011

Had a lie-in today so didn’t go to the Tiger Temple. Pottered about, ate 5tb chicken on a stick, read our books (need a new one!), played cards and Scrabble. Possibly Tiger Temple tomorrow. First lot of midgie bites is going down but they may start again – definitely not safe! Last night here tomorrow, going to book the minibus to Ayutthaya. We’ve heard it’s a bit boring but we’ll see. 1st lot of washing given away today – hope we get it back!

Extracts from a travel journal – Bangkok

Diamond House Hotel, Bangkok

10th Jan 2011

Just arrived at our hotel. Slept about 1/2 hour on the plane. Got lost finding hotel but found some nice people to help us! Bangkok  = terrifying so far!

(went to bed at 5 – slept for 16 hours!)

Khao San Road ghost cat

11th Jan 2011

Went for a wander and explored Khao San Road. A lady with a baby tried to scam us but we resisted. Same scam as a boy tried yesterday – luckily Dunc is savvy!

Had some excellent spring rolls and mojitos. Dinner = 120tb, 1 drink = 100tb – weird!

Decided to leave on Bangkok Thurs – too stressful for us!

A very tall Buddha

12th Jan 2011

Weird day! Got a tuk-tuk to the tourist office to ask about tickets to Kanchanaburi. Then got a taxi to the weird station where they said we had to book on the day. Taxi waited and took us back to Khao San Road where we got tickets for a minibus for 260tb each tomorrow at noon!

Rest of the day spent doing nothing. Found a nice bar and played cards. Used DEET for the first time – very sticky! (A bit drunk from 2 cocktails – oops!)

Slow News Day

In the absence of any actual news, here are a few more photos from around our little flat.

One very comfortable cat; I think he's settled in.

The books that made it onto the one bookcase we own

The books that didn't make the shelves.

My face, as it appears in our flat.

I feel like I should just make it known that there was no selection criteria for the books; it was just whatever came out of the box first. I wouldn’t want you to think I’d relegated most of my Harry Potter books to the floor. That just wouldn’t do.

Jennie’s Homemade Home

I got my sewing machine back out yesterday, which made me much happier than I thought it would. I was looking forward to using it again, but wasn’t expecting a little internal glow when I got it out of the box.

Anyway, the reason was that we are moving soon but we’re only taking a car load of stuff for now and obviously that doesn’t include our sofa. I had 2 big floor cushions to take, but they didn’t have covers and were looking pretty manky. Not any more! I went and bought some cheap fabric from Boyes (under £10 for 4 metres) and now they beautiful again. Check it out:

Look at what I did!

I’m getting very into re-painting and re-covering things to make them like new again. It’s so satisfying and actually pretty easy once you know how to do it. This way, I have had 4 ‘new’ dining chairs for £15, 2 floor cushions for £9.20 and 2 bedside tables for free (got the paint from my Dad). And if you know you can do these kinds of things, you can find all kinds of bargains about. I nearly bought a little coffee table for a fiver in a charity shop yesterday; all it needed was a varnish or some paint.

The next task will be curtains. There aren’t any in our new flat so I suspect I’m going to have to learn pretty swiftly how to make them. I’ll let you know how it goes!

I fall for this season every time…

I love English summer. I know it rains a lot, but I have no time for moaners. I also have no news to report so I’m just going to show you some pictures I took of the Park estate (my parents’ house, not mine unfortunately) in the sun and some of the epic things my Dad has been growing and letting me eat. Summer = win.

Vegetable patch, complete with polytunnel.

The Field

Ruby Chard

Gooseberries, yum

There are also loads of strawberries, raspberries, blackcurrants, fennel, peas, broad beans, lettuce and other things I can’t remember. So yes, it’s raining most of the time, but if it didn’t we’d be living in the desert (not necessarily a scientific fact…) and we wouldn’t be able to grow such lovely food. So stop moaning and enjoy it. Just buy a brolly for God’s sake.
